A deck had to be rebuilt and rotten sills replaced

Paul O'Brien Porch 01 A 30x4 foot porch was in need of new decking but the railing was to be saved.
Here we started to remove the old wet decking
This area receives no sun and with the many trees around it rarely dried out.
The steps have been removed to be put back later.
Paul O'Brien Porch 02 This is a view of the other side with the decking removed

At this point we knew that the joists had to be replaced as well
Paul O'Brien Porch 03 You can see here some of the initial deterioration of the siding.

The deck has been attached directly to the house and this was not a good omen.
Paul O'Brien Porch 04 Here again we have wet rotted wood around the corner post.
With the deck bolted directly to the house the wood just kept absorbing moisture.
It is never wise to nail, screw, or bolt any ledger board directly to the house.
Paul O'Brien Porch 05 The ledger board, joists and corner boards have been removed.
The damage the moisture has done to the house is quite evident.
The house sheathing was eaten away and the inside corner post virtually non-existant
Yes, the ants found the place to be a Five Star restaurant! They ate well.
Paul O'Brien Porch 06 Just a view from down the driveway.

Doesn't look bad from here does it?
Paul O'Brien Porch 07 The siding on this portion has been removed to expose the entire area.
Notice how far up the soggy sheathing has gotten.
Notice any house wrap or tar paper? There was none to protect the house from moisture.
Paul O'Brien Porch 08 Here the plywood sheathing has been removed.
The wall studs were so rotten at the bottom that we had to cut sections out.
It has become readily apparent that the sills had to be replaced
Paul O'Brien Porch 09 The corner studding has been replaced

Sections of the wall studs that were rotted have been replaced as well
